Workshop 9

Mathematics for Kindergarten Students

Kindergarten teachers build the foundation for learning mathematics.

This workshop focuses on visual and hands-on modeling methods for developing number, classification and patterning with an emphasis on vocabulary.  Mathematics for Kindergarten Students provides the foundation skills required for learning mathematics. Kindergarten teachers, this workshop is an opportunity you do not want to miss!

Concepts taught at this workshop are mapped to student expectations from Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, 2000, pages 392 and 394.

Students will:

  • know the meaning of numbers, count with understanding, and represent numerical relationships;
  • know the meaning of addition, subtraction, and grade appropriate meanings of multiplication and division;
  • use thinking strategies to master the doubles for addition, facts whose sum is ten, adding zero, one and two to a number;
  • compare and contrast objects, grouping them by classification schemes;
  • recognize and extend patterns.
