Workshop 5

The Literature and Math Connection

Do not overlook the opportunity to connect literature and mathematics -- a combination that changes students comprehension and mathematical abilities.  Design one or more workshops for your school improvement needs by selecting a book with the  NCTM expectations you want to address.   For a one day workshop, select 6 titles; for a two day workshop, select 12 titles.

For a list of additional books, E-mail Jane Haught at jane@masteringmath.com or call, 701-258-8618.

Concepts addressed by each book below are mapped to student expectations from Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, 2000.

Book Titles and NCTM Expectations:

1)  Mouse Count  -- Students will:

  • recognize, describe, and extend patterns.
  • know the facts whose sum is 10.
  • accurately estimate length.
  • draw the representation of a cylinder.

2)  The Very Busy Spider -- Students will:

  • draw an inscribed octagon.
  • draw a Venn diagram.
  • recognize various geometric shapes.

3)  Remainder of 1 -- Students will:

  • know the 5 ways to treat a remainder.
  • numerically represent an array.
  • count by 2's, 5's, and 10's and represent each pattern with a formula.

4)  Pigs Will be Pigs  /   Fun With Math and Money -- Students will:

  • Students will count money and make change.
