Workshop 3

Estimating Measures and Measuring, Telling Time

The games and hands-on activities provided at this workshop assure student mastery of the tools for measuring length, weight, angles, time, temperature, precipitation, evaporation, and wind velocity.  The games, materials, and wallboards you receive will turn a measuring unit into daily measuring experiences.

Concepts taught at this workshop are mapped to student expectations from Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, 2000, page 398.

Students will:

  • measure objects in nonstandard units;
  • use well developed strategies for estimating length, weight, measure of angles, time, and volume;
  • select and apply appropriate standard units and tools to measure length, weight, angles, temperature, and wind velocity;
  • tell time on an analog clock.

Literature Connection:  The Mitten / Telling Time with Big Momma Cat / Its Raining Its Pouring / How Tall  How Short  How Far Away

Who Should Attend This One Day Workshop:   K - 4th grade teachers and support staff

Teachers will receive:  table of measures, student dictionary with workbook, game book, classroom wallboards

Please bring:    deck of cards, 2 inch 3-ring binder, 15 feet of string, 50 unlined 3 by 5 cards, 5 self-sealing bags, paper clips, black permanent marker, tape, scissor, 100 popsicle sticks, 10 rubber bands, tacky putty, 10 tabbed dividers

Because of this program, I have seen reluctant math students blossom! The training and the materials that you receive at these workshops are outstanding.
