Workshop 1

Place Value; Trading Process for Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division

Modeling with place-value pieces and then writing the algorithm that represent their action with the model is how your students will learn the trading process for each operation in less than five days!

Concepts taught at this workshop are mapped to student expectations from Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, 2000, page 392.

Students will:

  • know the place-value structure of our base-ten number system for whole numbers;
  • approximate numbers by rounding;
  • use place-value pieces to model the trading process for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division;
  • write the algorithms that represent the trading process for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Literature Connection:  How Much is a Million  /  A Place for Zero: A Math Adventure

Who should attend this one day workshop:  K - 5th grade teachers and all support staff

Teachers will receive:  student dictionary with activity workbook, game book, grade level overheads for teaching trade

Please Bring:    deck of cards, 2 inch 3-ring binder, 5 rubber bands,  50 unlined 3 by 5 cards, 25 popsicle sticks, paper clips, 3 self-sealing bags, black permanent marker, 10 tabbed dividers

Few workshops create the excitement and enthusiasm for teaching mathematics as did Mastering Math.  You will leave this workshop with professionally prepared classroom-ready materials for teaching fundamental concepts and procedures.  I highly recommend Mastering Math workshops.
